It is currently illegal to discharge contaminated water directly into our seas. MARPOL (International Convention for the prevention of Pollution from Ships) current allowable limit is 15 parts per million and in specially Sensitive Areas (SSA’s) like the Baltic and the Mediterranean the limit is 0 and in others it is 5 parts million.

In all cases a boater found to be breaking these limits is liable to significant fines.

As oily water can be found in every boats bilge a boater who do not wish to face fines needs to be proactive and Halyard’s Wavestream Bilge Filters provide the perfect solution. A Wavestream Filter will remove even really oily bilge water (around 250 parts per million) to levels within legal limits (less than 15 parts per million). Normal bilge water is typically reduced to less than 5 parts per million.
